How we check

Every app on NoSubs.Club is checked by a person against its US App Store listing. We read the price and every in-app purchase, label how it is sold, and show the date we looked.

What the labels mean

Pay once

One price on the App Store. No subscription offered.

Example: BetterSnapTool, Calendaria

Lifetime option

Sells a subscription, but you can pay once instead.

Example: 1Blocker, Flighty

Paid major versions

You own this version. The next major version is a new purchase.

Example: Acorn 8

One-time unlock

Free to download, one purchase unlocks everything.

Example: Calcbot 2, Halide Mark III

Pay once, a year of updates

One payment and the app is yours to keep. Updates are included for a year.

Free, open source

Free, with the source code public.

Example: Gifski, NetNewsWire

Evidence levels

Checked on the App Store

We read the listing and every in-app purchase it shows.

Confirmed by the developer

The developer confirmed something the listing does not show, such as a lifetime price.

Installed by a reviewer

A reviewer installed the app and checked the purchase options in it.

Checked on the developer's site

For apps sold outside the App Store, we read the pricing page on the developer's own site.

How "cheaper from" is worked out

For apps with a lifetime option, we add up the yearly price one year at a time. The first year where that total passes the one-time price is when paying once starts to cost less.

1Blocker

$39.99 once, or $14.99 a year

  1. Year 1$14.99less than $39.99
  2. Year 2$29.98less than $39.99
  3. Year 3$44.97more than $39.99

So paying once is cheaper from year 3.

Re-checks and corrections

We re-check every listed app on a schedule. If nothing changed, only the "last checked" date moves. If the price or the in-app purchases change, a person reviews it before the page changes, and a change in how the app charges goes into the switch tracker.

Seen something out of date? Use "Report a price change" on the app's page.
